Types of ovarian cancer
The type of cell can determine the type of ovarian cancer and the area involved. Types of this disease are:
Epithelial tumors: Involve a thin layer of tissue outside the ovary. About 90% of ovarian cancers are epithelial tumors.
Stroma tumor: consists of ovarian tissue that contains hormone-producing cells. This type of tumor is detected in the early stages compared to other tumors. About 7% of ovarian tumors are of this type.
Embryonic cell tumor: This type of cancer is rare and is more common in younger women.
There is no safe way to prevent ovarianCancer. However, there may be ways to reduce the risk:
Taking birth control pills: Ask your doctor if taking birth control pills is right for you. Women taking birth control pills may reduce their risk of ovarianCancer. However, contraception with these oral medications also has its risks.
Talk to your doctor about your risk factors: If you have a family history of breast and ovarian cancer, talk to your doctor about it. Your doctor can determine if this means you are at risk for cancer. In some cases, your doctor may recommend a genetic counselor, and if you are at risk for a gene mutation, your risk of ovarian cancer increases. In this case, surgery may be performed to remove the ovaries to prevent ovarian cancer.
